Playing Our Part for World Environment Day

16 Jun 2009

On 5 June 2009, Broadcast Australia celebrated World Environment Day. The theme chosen by the company's Environmental Steering Committee was "From Little Things Big Things Grow", reinforcing the concept that everyone plays a part in environmental sustainability.

Around Australia staff planted trees, or implemented new initiatives. The Brisbane District Office partnered with local group Bat Care Brisbane to erect streamers on their barbed wire topped perimeter fence in an initiative designed to avoid flying foxes from becoming injured on the fence.

(L-R) Gary Baker, Winner of the Broadcast Australia Environmental Award for 2009 with Jim Hassell, Chief Operating OfficerIn Sydney the Broadcast Australia Group environmental award winners were announced with District Supervisor Gary Baker from Shepparton Victoria taking out the top honour for the innovation, effort, perseverance and leadership demonstrated in the promotion and design of a 15 kW wind energy conversion system at the Mt Owen site in Tasmania. One of the broadcast industry's greatest challenges, and by association Broadcast Australia's, is the environmental implications of the carbon generated by production of electricity. Gary's solution at Mt Owen is both environmentally sustainable and financially sound. It also enables Broadcast Australia to bring a customer service on line that has until now been delayed. It is expected that the project will form the basis for an expanded rollout of new renewable source technologies that can be integrated into our existing electrical supply and distribution systems in the years to come.
