A flood of thanks

22 Jun 2011

David Pendleton, the ABC's Chief Operations Officer, recently thanked staff at Broadcast Australia’s Bald Hills site for their tireless efforts during the Queensland floods. Mr Pendelton wanted to personally meet and thank some of the staff who helped keep the ABC's services on-air during the Queensland floods. A barbecue was staged to celebrate the occasion.

Mr Pendleton acknowledged that when the floods hit Queensland, the company's maintenance teams went above and beyond the call of duty to maintain broadcast services across the stricken region—paying particular emphasis on the ABC local radio services that serve the local communities as the disaster radio network.

Preventative measures were taken before the floodwater hit, such as checking all the emergency power plants, and installing back-up satellite receivers at some key sites. During the floods, 'fly-away' transmitters were deployed to the worst affected areas, and in one instance, a fly-away transmitter was actually improvised from spares to ensure the ABC's services stayed on air.

During the visit, Mr Pendleton was able to express his sincere and heartfelt thanks the staff present for their professional help and tireless efforts during the natural disaster.
