Briefs - Helping to Regenerate Hexam

17 Mar 2009

The Hunter Catchment Management Trust (HCMT) has finalised its project to rehabilitate the estuarine wetlands formerly within the Hexham Swamp, near Newcastle in NSW, with the opening of the floodgates on Ironbark Creek. The floodgates had been constructed in the early 1970's.

Broadcast Australia owns and operates a transmission site within the Hexham Swamp precinct. Affected land was reclaimed as part of this project.

This rehabilitation project is the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere and came to fruition in December 2008, when with due ceremony, the flood gates were opened releasing thousands of litres of water into the swamp lands, reinvigorating the land and returning the swamp to its once tidal state.
