Heading to BroadcastAsia 2010

26 May 2010

Digital communications specialist Broadcast Australia will discuss the challenges of digital switchover, digital radio and meeting the coverage demands of portable TV devices at the forthcoming BroadcastAsia 2010 exhibition in Singapore.

According to Chris Jaeger, Managing Director of Broadcast Australia's International Business, broadcasters and other major stakeholders will need to make business and infrastructure decisions as the migration to digital broadcasting gains momentum across the region. "Depending on location, there are different network and coverage factors that need to be considered," he said. "The massive uptake in mobile broadband and portable TV devices is changing the ground rules; there's now the option to deploy a new breed of network that will simultaneously support broadcasting of HD and SDTV signals for fixed, portable and mobile reception, without the need for external receive antennas."

The so-called high-density network (HDN) is essentially a single-frequency network (SFN) comprising multiple low-power transmission sites that together provide a consistently high signal level across the entire coverage area. Such a network would also address numerous other digital television reception challenges, most notably reception in high-density living environments, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, where master antenna systems otherwise require upgrading.

Broadcast Australia will also be on hand to discuss issues surrounding digital switchover, as the dates for the first Australian analogue services to be switched off draw near. Here, key challenges include how to address coverage of digital black spots and maximising digital dividend. The 'Challenges and opportunities in addressing the digital switchover' will be the subject of an important presentation by Broadcast Australia Planning Engineer, Suvendu Mukherjee, at the BroadcastAsia International Conference.

"As viewing habits change and new platforms and services emerge, it is clear that the digital broadcast field is being re-landscaped," Jaeger said. "Broadcast Australia has unsurpassed expertise in the planning, design and operation of digital broadcast networks for both television and radio, as the result of more than decade of network operations, planning projects and field trials. We are very well placed to support and invest in new digital broadcast networks."
