Spheres of Operation

Broadcast Australia is the owner and operator of one of the most extensive terrestrial broadcast transmission networks in the world. We provide transmission services for radio and television (analogue and digital) broadcasters and offer site sharing, co-hosting and infrastructure services to the telecommunications, emergency services and broadcasting industries. Broadcast Australia acts as the “neutral host” for a multitude of customers across a range of technologies utilising its transmission infrastructure.

The company’s aim is to harness the full benefits of communications technology in order to provide broadcasters throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region with world-class broadcasting technologies.

With more than 75 years broadcast transmission experience, Broadcast Australia plays a strategic role in developing new and emerging technologies through its research and development activities and the conduct of trials. Research findings are then applied to the management and operation of Broadcast Australia’s service delivery. For instance:-

  • Broadcast Australia is currently conducting trials of Infocasting (alternatively known as ‘datacasting’ - a unique Australian DVB-T service), Digital Radio (utilising both DAB Eureka 147 MPEG 1 Layer 2 and Digital Radio Mondiale technologies) and Mobile TV (utilising DVB-H Nokia and Cardinal systems).
  • Broadcast Australia has also conducted original research and development into:-
    • Long distance Single Frequency Networks (SFNs) in conjunction with the introduction of digital television into Australia. Long distance SFNs are now a key feature of the SBS digital television network and are expected to become part of networks established for new emerging technologies such as infocasting and mobile TV; and
    • DAB+ Audio Testing.

In the Asia–Pacific region, Broadcast Australia provides a range of services including: planning and design of networks, installation, system integration and operations and maintenance. These services are particularly applied to digital television and radio and new technologies. Broadcast Australia seeks long term business partnerships in the investment and operation of digital broadcast networks.

The broadcast industry worldwide is currently experiencing exciting times as it introduces digital technologies and considers the phasing out of analogue services – digital migration. Broadcast Australia is committed to providing ongoing high level support to existing analogue services whilst researching, consulting, planning and rolling out new digital services. This ability to co-host and manage multiple transmission technologies within one network gives customers the confidence that existing services will not be compromised.
